Doctor of physical and mathematical sciences, professor, active member of Russian Academy of Sciences, Vice-President of Russian Academy of Sciences.

Rector of M.V. Lomonosov Moscow State University since 1992.

Field of scientific researches: mathematics, mechanics and informatics.

Founder of new scientific school in area of differential operators, on the mathematical substantiation of the approaches to relativistic theory of gravitation.

V.A. Sadovnichiy's scientific researches concern the theory of differential operators, functional analysis. He has reached the important results of theoretical and the applied character, dealt with problems of dynamic imitation of movement's control, particularly a spacecraft, the flying machine. On their basis for the first time in the world it was possible to create a simulator, imitating zero-gravity in terrestrial conditions.

The member of Directorate since 1992, President of the Russian Rectors' Union since 1994.

President of the Eurasian Association of Universities, member of Permanent Committee of Rectors' Conferences of the European Universities, the honorary member and honorary doctor of various foreign scientific academies, member of Ministry of Education and Science of Russian Federation's Board. Member of Council under President of the Russian Federation on Science, Technologies and Education, member of Council under Security Council of the Russian Federation, member of Russian language Council under the Government of the Russian Federation.

Awarded with an award “For merits before Fatherland” (second and third degrees), two Red Banner of Labor awards, various medals, awards of Russian Orthodox Church: St. Macarii, Mitropolitan of Moscow (first degree), St. Daniel, Prince of Moscow (second degree). Laureate of State Prizes of the USSR, Russian Federation, Prizes n.a. M.V. Lomonosov. Awarded with rewards of foreign countries.
